Comments Thread For: Maurice Hooker: I've Gotta Be Smart, Can't Lose Focus Against Young, Hungry Ortiz

Maurice Hooker recalls a momentary lapse in focus costing him dearly during the sixth round of his fight against Jose Ramirez. According to Hooker, briefly losing focus enabled Ramirez to hit him with the left hook that led to Hooker getting stopped while still standing in their 140-pound title unification fight in July 2019. The former WBO junior welterweight champion recognizes that he cannot afford to make a similar defensive mistake against an even more dangerous puncher March 20 at ****ies Arena in Fort Worth, Texas.

Salute to Mo (Vergil Ortiz Jr.)! Salute to Lipinets (Boots Ennis)! They didn't have to take these fights, yet they did! This what I mean, when I say MAN UP!

This is a can't miss fight. Hooker will test Ortiz. Props to Maurice for taking the fight.

Sexy fight, pretty damn good and gutsy matchup especially for the pandemic

A scared man can't win, he won't even play. Hook will take on 16-0, 16KO Ortiz. That's salt to death, but Shakur can't get a partner? Fear is fear, be it from pain, shame, or work.

I wish I can have the same enthusiasm as everyone else. I see this as more of a test to see where Hooker is at rather than Ortiz. Ortiz is clearly a very good fighter, and a clear favorite. It should end in a relatively easy KO for Ortiz. The surprise here would be if Hooker does well or wins.

Also this fight is next month, yet boxrec is slacking by not having the fight as scheduled. I guess they are not crazy about it either. Or do they have some rule where put up a fight closer to fight night now?

I like this interview by Hooker. I’ve been watching this sport for a while, and it just feels like he’s focused and his head is in the right place.
