Comments Thread For: Sonny Liston and The Secrets He's Held on To For 50 Years

Sonny Liston won't ever be forgotten but the 50th anniversary of his death came and went with very little fanfare. Some will contend that's because he hadn't endeared himself in his fighting heyday he wasn't owed any more than a cursory mention. Maybe it's the fact that we still don't know how he died which means there's a reluctance to revisit a story that has never had a definitive ending.

Big fan of Liston, but this writer needs to proof read his work better.

"His wife, Geraldine, was away at the as Liston lay in their home alone."

"Sonny’s rap sheet in life had grown beyond his prison sentence, with motoring and weapons offences and he’d been banned form fighting in New York because of his links to gangsters…"

I challenge ANYONE, including the author of this article and those who leave messages below it.

Get the book by Paul Gallender: Sonny Liston - The Real Story Behind the Ali-Liston Fights.

It has more answers than most, never-before-seen pictures, the most compelling evidence of his REAL age (you won’t believe how old he was when he fought Ali), and much more!

Thank you I will check it out. It’s entirely possible that Ali wasn’t even the best heavyweight of his era. Sounds crazy but maybe Liston really was that good.

Liston was a good fighter, and his life was sadly cut short one way or the other, but let's not gloss things up. The "phantom" punch landed, it's clear as day on footage we can see now.

It was not a massively hard shot, just a basic shot that laid him out. In today's time's he'd be called chinny, because he's a "Golden Era" fighter, he's called a great.

Fighters from the past are judged by a far lower and more convenient bar. It's just a fact.

Liston was past his prime when he fought Ali, and much older than his reported age.....Nevertheless, Ali's footwork would have given Liston problems at any age....It could have been a closer fight is all.

                Everyone knows why Liston died.

                Same reason Gino Hernandez died.

He fought five rounds with a broken jaw. Chinny fighters don't do that

I don't think he was chinny, but it would be the consensus today. A fighter can get knocked out cold in today's boxing, and there will still be many people saying he quit.

I think the social media age makes it easier to critisize fighters now, and I think that's a big reason with the perception of a fighters 0 now.

Anyone who loses one fight gets called a bum. It wasn't the case years ago, and it isn't about the best fighting the best, when 1 fights 2 now, the loser is just a bum.

It's hard to win as a modern day fighter, especially compared to the olden day ones, as times were different then.
