Comments Thread For: Luke Campbell Trainer on Ryan Garcia Bout: 'Close Rounds, We're Not Going To Get Them'

Trainer Shane McGuigan is not about to let his confidence in Luke Campbell detract from his pragmatist outlook. A 33-year-old native of the UK, Campbell will go into enemy territory on Jan. 1 when he swaps punches with the sharpshooting Tik-Tok phenom Ryan Garcia, 22, at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas. Given Garcia's popularity and the fact that he has home-court advantage (Garcia resides in Los Angeles, Calif.), McGuigan understands that his charge will need to do more than box his way to a victory. In fact, McGuigan thinks he needs to shoot for a stoppage.

They’re already showing him too much respect. When you make excuses pre-fight, that’s bad. Especially the coach, that’s not a good mindset to have. The coach’s mindset affects the fighter.

Right this is not the attitude you want going into a big fight like this

I mean is it really an excuse though? I think it’s great that they aren’t being naive. Knowing what they know should give them more incentive to fight harder and leave no stone unturned. We all know this is supposed to be Garcia’s coming out party. Most of us know how this works. Campbell isn’t supposed to win he’s just supposed to be a formidable opponent. The promotion has been all about Garcia

Campbell is an Olympic Gold medalist. His team should be talking him up. He has vastly more experience than Garcia. I don’t think it’s a good idea to have the mentality of a victim in a fight of this magnitude.

I would be a lot more worried about Campbell’s lack of activity than who the judges will be biased for. How’d they allowed an Olympic Gold medalist to go without a fight for 16 months is ridiculous.

Also the first Mendy fight happened in England, where Mendy clearly won. There was absolutely no way Campbell won that fight, so 113-115 for him was a disgrace. I can see how Team Campbell can see that and say “It can happen to us too”. But their main focus should really be shaking the cobwebs, making sure they learned from their losses to Mendy, Linares and Lomachenko, and stay on top of Garcia. Don’t even let him breathe. Embracing a “close” loss sounds like a defeatist mentality.

With that attitude from his corner, Campbell already lost even before the bell rings.

Can a draw be on the cards? Campbell clearly outpoints Garcia but they fight a draw and do the rematch as in Canelo-Golovkin I ?

Brits are on a losing streak in the USA lately - Brook, Smith, Fielding, Khan, Joshua - lets hope Campbell isn't another.
Let's get Fury back in action and Taylor can fight Ramirez in Vegas.

So if you win a round, but not big, you don't win a round?

                Will this ever stop?

Campbell fought scared. Aside from the KD in round 2, he gave Garcia too much respect. Needs a coach who will make him be more ballsy and not making him a victim pre-fight. Campbell can clearly punch, is clearly skillful, bums don’t win Gold medals in the Olympics. But needs a coach who will bring more out of him. Campbell lost this fight before it started. Instead of worrying about scorecards, worry about actually training your fighter and give him more confidence in himself.
