Comments Thread For: Teofimo Lopez Forcefully Backs Up 'The Takeover' Promise in 2020

In April of 2019, Teofimo Lopez was a little perturbed. Not upset, really, just a little bit annoyed that he was being called the Prospect of the Year by many in the boxing world. Simply put, in his eyes, he was already a contender and moving fast towards championship level despite only having 12 pro fights. That wasn't an outrageous ask, considering that the man in his sights Vasiliy Lomachenko had 13 bouts in the punch for pay ranks at the time.

This article sums up what's wrong with a lot of today's boxing journalism.

I get it, the author wanted to hype up Teo. I get that.

But, you can't sit there and talk about the fights not happening in other divisions then try to imply Teo is different.

Last I checked, the opponent most mentioned as next for Teo is his mandatory, Kambosos. Teo himself has mentioned going to 140 next. When asked about Ryan Garcia, Devin Haney, and Tank Davis, Teo equivocates. Teo acts like they need to prove themselves more, as if two of those three (Ryan and Tank) aren't larger draws and bigger names than Teo is...and, as if the only reason Teo got the Loma fight is because Vasyl liked his chances against Lopez much better than he saw them vs Haney.

In other words, it's not so much a takeover as it is a cash grab...which is fine. He did beat Commey and Loma and deserves to be recognized for that. And, he shouldn't be criticized for trying to parley his success into big paydays. Just stop writing crap that tries to frame Teo Lopez as acting any different than any other fighter who finds himself with real leverage.

But, the hype train must go on, right?

From what I can see with the way Teo is talking about A side this, and no rematch that, I don't see any signs of the old school mentality coming back. I think he is going to be just as much a ***** about this stuff as any of the moderns have been.

"Then again, maybe boxers need to follow the lead of Teofimo Lopez. He was already ahead of the game and he told us about it, but we didn’t listen."

And we're still not listening! Jaron "Boots" Ennis is screaming at us, and we're not listening! 26-0 w/ 24 KOs, and we're still not listening! Vergil Ortiz Jr. is screaming at us, and we're still not listening! 16-0 w/ 16 KOs, and we're still not listening! Do they have to get a belt first? Really?

Spence Jr. vs. Boots, Crawford vs. Ortiz Jr.! I hope '21 changes the game! A loss to Mayweather didn't kill Canelo's career! These YGs are ready, willing, and able! Please, somebody give them a chance! MAN UP!

Big fights in the future for Teofimo if he keeps winning--likely will move to 140 because too hard to make 135. He will be at 147 in a couple years. At 135 Tank, Haney, Ryan Garcia & others would be good if done SOON.

After Lopez successfully defends against Kambosos, I wonder who he’ll have his sights set on. He can shoot for a unification bout against Haney and battle for undisputed or he can call out Ryan Garcia. He has several options and can show us the “takeover” take place as he has stated.
