Saul Canelo' Alvarez has been vocal of his desire to establish himself as the undisputed super middleweight champion. Ever daring to be great, that quest for divisional supremacy begins at the top. Alvarez's challenge of unbeaten 168-pound titlist Callum Smith (27-0, 19KOs) became a reality following extensive talks with several of the division's best players. From there came the very best fight that can be made at that weight, which takes place December 19 live on DAZN from The Alamodome in San Antonio.

Would this fight be happening if Smith had blasted Ryder instead of the šh*tty night he had? The world will never know.

He lost his last fight. Even Canelo fans on here had Smith losing his last fight, but now suddenly he's the best in the division

Maybe Canelo is just following Canelo logic, which is that you're the best if you bribe the judges and make it to the final bell

I dont agree that Smith is the best at 168, that would be Benavidez and 2nd would be Plant. That said, I rather he fight Smith than Yildrim. Avni had no chance. Smith has a small chance.

Canelo is not referring to what casual fans think is the best, he's talking actual boxing rankings. When you chexk the actual ranking, Smith is ranked #1-- as he should be. He's resume is better than both benavidez and plants (I do agree with you tho that benavidez would lay the smackdown on Smith)
