  • Comments Thread For: Trainer: Roy Jones' Hand Speed Still Incredible, Skills Give Edge Over Mike Tyson

Tom Yankello, the current trainer of former four division world champion Roy Jones Jr, believes his boxer would consider the possibility of continuing to fight - but only against other legends. Jones, 51-years-old, will return to the ring on November 28 in Los Angeles, when he faces former undisputed heavyweight champion Mike Tyson.

I think Mike's camp made the rounds 2 minutes instead of 3 because they know that Mike fades towards the end of the round. They want to give him enough breathers so that he can unload in every round without giving Roy a chance to to outbox him. That could be key to the fight. If it was a normal 3 minute round fight and Roy didn't get clipped early, I would expect Roy to outbox Mike for the 2nd half of the fight with relative ease if he had any legs left. But if his legs are Sergio Martinez shot then the ref will stop the fight early.

I agree the 2 minute thing was brought on by Tyson, and if it wasn’t, then it def benefits him more. Still, I don’t think Tyson wins this “fight”.

He has no chin now for sure, but the question would be if Mike has the same type of accuracy he once had, which was his biggest problem ever since he was 30, and if that devastating power is still there and can he apply it on a moving target?

hitting the body bag or the pads is easy and it makes him look good, but is his nervous system ready to react fast and accurate enough to process and catch a moving target that's gonna be punching back maybe in combos? how many neurological connections did he destroy through boxing and decades of substance abuse and obesity. At least Roy has been clean and has been in the gym. Abusing your body will always bite you in the ass no matter how much in shape you think you are.

It's not about the hand speed!? It's about the ability to take a punch & the legs. Lost mobility when he lost leg muscle coming down in weight & never took correct steps to fixe it.

While all of that maybe true, Tyson only needs to connect (1) time with a hard shot and Roy is in serious trouble. Roy has been stopped (5) times (Tarver, Johnson, Green, Lebedev, Maccarinelli). I don’t care how much shape your in, that muscle memory and the ability to absorb at shot never leaves either. I don’t know, 8 round fight, 2 minutes per round, may favor Roy’s conditioning, but even his trainer stated, his agility isn’t where it used to be, and he is probably referring to when he last fought in 2018.

He will disguise it like he did (5) other times when he was stopped against Tarver, Johnson, Green, Lebedev, Maccarinelli?

I like Roy he's been one of my favorites. But, he might still have fast hands for his legs and chin are gone! He cant stay on the ropes with a high guard and let Tyson work. Tyson will kO him if he does. I can see Roy trying to survive until the later rounds and try to land something big on Mike.
