  • Comments Thread For: Recalling Steward's Brilliance an Appropriate Way To Celebrate Milestone

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - It's a time-machine Tuesday morning. Twelve years ago this week, after tracking me down at a Quonset hut in Parts Unknown, the powers-that-be at Boxing Scene deemed it wise to devote a weekly chunk of column space to a guy from Niagara Falls whose fandom traces back to when the WBA only had one champion (gasp!) per weight class...

The same think would have happened in the second Cotto/Margarito fight. Cotto was winning every round but was starting to wilt under the pressure. They didn't stop the fight to preserve Margarito's eye, they stopped it to preserve Cotto's win.

Correct, the win was sponsored by Manny Pacquaio. I will keep saying it over & over that Cotto was a good fighter but too overrated. Couldn't beat most high level fighters in their prime or when healthy

I vividly remember Emmanuel's commentary during Toney vs Jirov.

        He is missed.

One of my favorite boxing color commentators of all time. He had a great eye for predicting the outcome of fights all while watching the action unfold.

I miss Emanuel calling fights. I often watch fights he commented on just to listen to him. Truly one of the greatest trainers ever. Anyone remember the Taylor vs Spinks fight? Steward was pissed in the corner yelling at Jermaine

Nothing overrated about him. He was a great fighter fighting in an era of great fighters where some were even greater than him. Solid HOF career. Fought everyone. Didn't beat everyone. It happens.

Fool's good, he was good but not great like Benitez,Torres,Tito,Ortiz,Gomez,Calderon,&Montanez,.He barely sc****d by a 2007 mosley, fought Jennings(who?) to win a 147 title;avoided Paul Williams, after Jennings he got a gift Clottey win,he beat one leg foreman to get a 154 title, avoiding a healthy Martinez, fought a one leg Martinez to get a middleweight title and avoided GGG,
                  Whooped by Trout & a Sadam Ali, yes a B-level fighter..I won't mention in detail floyd,manny,canelo,& margarito

Deontay could have used training from Steward.

He was great with tall fighters with a rangy offense
