  • Comments Thread For: De La Hoya Wants To See What 'Phenom' Vergil Ortiz Is 'Made Of' In Late Rounds

Oscar De La Hoya hopes Vergil Ortiz Jr. at least goes some rounds with Samuel Vargas on Friday night. Ortiz's promoter feels confident about the 22-year-old welterweight's readiness to fight for a world title. De La Hoya would become more comfortable, though, knowing how Ortiz responds to competing later in bouts.

Anybody know why they picked Vargas for Ortiz? Or is this just another apple to oranges comparison to how other notable opponents Vargas fought did compared to how Ortiz will do? Unless Oscar couldn't find anyone else or is running out of worthy opponents to test the highly touted prospect of Golden Boy. This card unfortunately is not a good one since they lost the more intriguing one of Tanajara and Gesta

When do we get to see what Canelo is made of in the later rounds? Why did Oscar never bring that up? He brings up later rounds etc yet his most prized fighter has issues past round 7 with stamina..............

Vergil has knocked everyone he's faced and only 1 opponent has even reached the 6th round. It's not about stamina it's about him getting more work to get some experience going deep into fights but every time they step up the opponents he's Knocking them out. lol Last 3 opponents all durable veterans who been in with world champs and none were stopped until Vergil fought them. I would be worried about him not getting enough pro rounds if not for the fact he's with Robert Garcia and he's sparring the best of the best all world champs in that stable and he fights them every day.

I get that and I think that he is still getting good experience even with knocking out his opponents early. As with any PRO moving up in quality opponent the question is always stamina. Coming from the amateurs and then moving into the pros you are used to short fights. In my eyes stamina is one of the biggest differences between a good boxer and a great boxer.
