Comments Thread For: Jayson Velez Explains Why He Selected Oscar Valdez Over Chris Colbert

Junior lightweight Jayson "La Maravilla" Vlez had two options on his hands. The first was to challenge Chris Colbert for the interim-World Boxing Association (WBA) super featherweight championship. However, for this he would have to wait until the fall.

Velez was robbed in his last fight against Arbodela so he deserves a big fight and that was one of the best fights of the year as well!

Valdez is in transitions of his old style to a more defensive minded style behind Reynoso which I think is counterintuitive to him!

Wouldn’t surprise me one bit if Velez works over Valdez at some point in the fight if unheralded Adam Lopez could and Velez is awkward, better stamina and packs a bigger punch!

      Looking forward to this fight!

This actually is a solid good match up compared to what Top Rank has been putting on. I know Velez at this point is more of a gatekeeper, but has a solid chin, decent power, and tuff as nails, he has fought very good competition and has hung in there pretty good. I expect Valdez to win, but if he doesn't bring his A game, I could see Velez causing some issues. Looking forward to it.

That fight was very close Arboleda won most the early rounds but I can see your point Velez came on very strong and almost had him out of there in the later rounds and I wouldn't have been mad with him winning he is tough has a good chin and has decent power Valdez hasn't looked good his past few fights he always is going to have power in that left hook but this fight is a good test to see where he's really at in the 130 lb division.

I also agree with Velez picking him over the champion for one he is probably going to get paid more and another reason is if he does manage to beat Valdez he will propel himself into bigger paydays and a shot against Berchelt so it's a win-win for him.

I'm still going for Valdez he's a warrior and is never in a bad fight I think he has enough to beat Velez but I'd favor Berchelt over him.

It may be a more exciting fight, but Valdez is easier to hit. Colbert is a puzzle, Valdez is a bull. Nobody will complain, because it's a good matchup, but it's a backhand compliment for Colbert. Colbert needs his day, but not against a scrub, a name and a challenge on the big, 60 inch big screen.

I kind of disagree with the Arboleda winning most of the early rounds thing, he did well but Jayson had plenty of his moments early while late it was mainly a one sided beating and an extra knockdown should’ve been scored for Velez!

I think Velez is gonna shock some people, Valdez is vulnerable right now!

And as far as Berchelt vs Valdez that’s a easy pick, Berchelt will stop him in 8!

Valdez needs more time with Reynoso or maybe it’s just not a good fit, doesn’t take away from either!
