Former bantamweight world titleholder Alfred Kotey died of an undisclosed illness in the Bronx, New York, on Tuesday. He was 52. Kotey, who was born in Bukom, Ghana, on June 3, 1968, represented his country in the 1988 Seoul Olympics and in 1994 became Ghana's fifth world champion when he won a unanimous decision over Puerto Rico's Rafael Del Valle to claim the WBO bantamweight world title at London's famed York Hall.

I remember first hearing about Kotey in the early 90’s as Frank Warren was trying to match him with Naseem Hamed who was at 122 at the time.

After losing his WBO strap, he became a bit of a journeyman but he went on to fight some top fighters. Marquez, Freitas, Salido, Espadas. Went the distance with all of them too.

I hate these types of news that make me sad.

My condolences and goodness to the family of Alfred Kotey in this difficult time and my heart feel empathy for them. Alfred Kotey, you had never give up fighting against a bunch of top boxers or the best, you earned our respects in our hearts, Rest in Peace Champ knowing you accomplish your dreams.
