He landed the shots because he took them. I would say that Anthony probably underestimated Ruiz so Ruiz was able to get the opportunity to throw the big shots. As you can see from the second fight, Anthony was no longer underestimating Ruiz and Ruiz had gained too much weight making his ability to close the distance even harder.
