Comments Thread For: Canelo Crossing Fingers That September Fight Moves Forward

So far there is no solidified date or a confirmed opponent for Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez. He was scheduled to return in May, likely against WBO super middleweight champion Billy Joe Saunders, but the fight was postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic. And the next target date is September 12, possibly in a trilogy fight with Gennady Golovkin.

I hope it's Billy Joe. I feel like his sell by date is fast approaching and I see him as the most capable and deserving opponent under Golovkin at 160. Plus he is the polar opposite of Golovkin. A lot people including me think his south paw fleet footed style is a hard style match up for Canelo, if not the hardest. Another big selling point for this point is the Gypsy fever going on with Fury's historical performance against Wilder. A really great time promotionally to stage this fight.

I'm equally interested and uninterested in that fight...I agree that BJS on his night is special and could legit beat Canelo...but I can't ever see him getting a decision and I can't see him KOing Canelo...so kind of takes away the fun...but would still like to see if BJS could do it in my eyes

But that's the part of the charm of this fight to me. If we are to assume Canelo is going to coast into the twilight years of his career getting every decision his way in LV, then what better person to shake things up than an unruly, belligerent, gypsy who is capable of taking every round from him? Then when he gets robbed he (unlike Fury) will set a fire under the traveler crowd and there will be genuine push back against Canelo.

At least, that is the scenario I'm predicting. For the good of boxing, it still would be great for Canelo's legacy and boxing over all to show a good account of himself with someone as awkward and effective as BJS
