  • Comments Thread For: Fernando Vargas Compares His Generation To Current Era

Last month a press conference was held in Las Vegas to announce the Nevada Boxing Hall of Fame's 2020 class. One of the inductees, Fernando Vargas, was on hand for the proceedings. The former multi-time world champion was very appreciative of the honor when he heard the news.

If we have Vargas now he wouldn’t have fought anyone, they would never have pitted him against Quartey, De la Hoya or Trinidad at the stage of his career in his era. He would be pitted against bums and called a star, whilst telling everyone that he is the A-side with 15k people watching him in arenas. That is the era that we are in now.... Just fans following mouthpieces and repeating the same thing that they hear them say.

He dared to be great although never reached the heights at least he tried.

Respect to him Trindad vs Vargas one of the greatest fights ever

Vargas deserves more respect for his loss vs Trinidad than most guys deserve for wins. At 22 he had already faced campas, winky, quartey and Trinidad,.... and all were 30 and under when he faced them. He wasn't chasing faded old names. When he said he was chasing greatness, he meant it. It wasn't a scam like we see with today's guys.

You’re absolutely right. We wouldn’t know how good a prospect claiming to be great is until they’re close to 30 years old.

Man I sure loved watching him fight. Boxing had a more broad audience back then in the 90s too. Was a better era for the sport
