Comments Thread For: Roger Mayweather Trainer Jesse Reid Recalls Legacy Of Late Fighter

Jesse Reid trained Roger Mayweather from his pro debut all the way throughout the entire 1980s and was the coach in the Black Mamba's corner both times he became a world champion. The last fight Reid cornered Mayweather, against Julio Cesar Chavez a second time in 1989 at The Forum in Los Angeles, Reid didn't even make it out of the fight. He was thrown out of the bout by referee Hank Elespuru just as the seventh round finished when he walked into the ring, grabbed Chavez as he was still throwing punches after the bell and drove him across the canvas.

We all saw that sparring and look

Paul Spadafora was about to fight and Floyd wasn’t in the gym at all, so I wouldn’t put more into that than what it is. I fought him early in his career and he was good but hell on a good night he couldn’t be a good bag boy for Floyd. In fact Paul and I have common opponents also and he beat Bernard Harris my Detroit homie and also Desi Ford but know where near Floyd level so Jessie can stop right there!

That pad routine Uncle Rog had with his nephew was sick. The first time I saw it(?) I was looking for footage just so I could see it again, again, again....! Lil Floyd benefitted big time from that - with those moves becoming second nature in the ring.... Uncle Rog jumping in the ring after Zab hit Floyd low was classic, it showed how much he cared about his neph..... Cool uncle Rog added to that championship caliber of "Lil Floyds" legacy, and somehow along the way Jesse Reid was a part of that.....Respect!
