  • Comments Thread For: Delfine Persoon Suffers Loss In Opening Round of Olympic Qualifiers

Nine months after nearly becoming the undisputed lightweight champion in the pro ranks, Delfine Persoon is now down to a last chance opportunity to keep alive her Olympic dream. The former long-reigning World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight titlist from Belgium suffered a surprise points loss to Greece's Nikoleta Peta in the opening round of the Olympic qualifiers Saturday at Copper Box Arena in Hackney Wick, England. Four of the five judges scored the contest 29-28 in favor of Peta, with the dissenting judge awarding the bout to Persoon.

This will happen more and more it has got to be tough for a pro to just let the leather fly and not think about timing countering as much as volume plus the muscle memory of starting slower most of the time due to 10 or 12 round fights . I find this to be a silly idea( letting pros fight in the Olympics) . It isn't like hockey where the pros play pretty much the exact same game , it is much differnt . That being said it is on the pro to train for the 4 round fight and adapt , however I think this is why in the super 8 three round tournaments this is also why we saw alot of favorites get outworked and lose. I dont think one former top10 boxer has made serious noise in the llynoics yet....the best guys wont do it . From the top of my head didnt Hassan n'dam get owned in the Olympics 4 years ago too ??( not that he had the championship calibre as persoon [ woman or not ]).

Amateur boxing is just a different game. 3 rounders don't give much time to invest in body punching or break an opponent down.

You mostly just have to spray and pray with your punches.

            Great News!

This is great news. Pros have no business fighting in the amateurs anyway! Now I'm glad Katie got a gift decision against her.

                Feel sad for Delfine Persoon.

In this case, Delfine Persoon lost fair and square in this Olympic qualifier. That is why amateur and professional are different and we cannot compare those two when X boxer in amateur defeat X boxer in amateur, but that same X boxer who win in amateur, lost to the same X boxer in professionals. This is only one factor, there are a good numbers of factors when we compare amateur vs professional.
