Comments Thread For: Lewis Ritson Set For Return, April 4 In Newcastle

Lewis Ritson looks like he has a return date as he aims to continue his charge towards a world title. The former British lightweight champion stepped up to super-lightweight last year and bounced back from his maiden career defeat. Ritson (20-1, 12 KOs) challenged Francesco Patera for the European lightweight title back in October 2018, losing a split decision, at what was then the Metro Radio Arena in Newcastle.

A man gets resoundingly defeated at European-level, in a lower weight class. So he moves up a division, beats two journeymen and a domestic rival, and then his promoter makes loud/obnoxious claims that he is now a World-level fighter. And yet, he will fight an opponent in April who is nowhere near World-level, and an opponent who won't be allowed a full training camp. Why do they need to do this? The fight is announced now but the opponent won't be revealed until late February, early March time. Do Eddie Hearns acolytes buy into Lewis Ritson being World-level?

Agree partially, don’t think he was resoundingly beaten but he was outboxed and that’s gonna happen when he steps up to world class especially as
he hits quite hard but nothing that’s gonna take a world level fighter out of the game.

Hearn knows the Northeast is an easy win. Ritson is a big ticket seller who with minimal promoting will be a massive ticket seller with that whole Geordie nation angle.

But like you say. It doesn’t look like he’s really gonna be good enough to go that big. Unless some sort of trilogy ensues with another Brit who picks up a world title but that’s not gonna happen either.

Logically speaking - if you managed Ritson you’d have to tred water with him really. Hope he improves.

      He’s basically John Murray.

He might be able to separate himself from domestic rivals maybe but it’s hard to see him go much further than that.

Hearn and him will make money though.

Then maybe he goes to America and gets splattered for a world title on a big undercard.

Not to be cynical like. But I’d like him to make his money like I want all of them to make some dough

Can't argue with your outlook. The fight that is being hyped long-term, versus Josh Taylor, will be a massacre. Stick him in against someone like Chris Algieri, what a banana skin that would be?! How would you see a Ritson vs. Ohara Davies fight going? There are actually a lot of really good fights to be made at Super Lightweight, but they continue to pull out obscure journeymen ranked outside the BoxRec top 100.

Hearn knows if he’s lucky along the way he could get him a title shot down the line, he’d sell out st James park if he did.
And 60k plus for a domestic fighter is unreal business .

I do think he’s reached his ceiling but we’ll turn up anyway to cheer on the local lad,( Toon Toon )

He's a ticket seller, can draw a big crowd, big puncher doesn't seem scared of anything. I believe he's drawing about 8K, the difference is he's not afraid to lose.

Good luck to him, world beater ... nope ... he'd have to improve massively its been done but unlikely.

I believe Hearn said that he could get into a title fight or an eliminator .. that could happen.

Why hate on guys who take a loss? it kills boxing everyone just runs around protecting there 0 fighting guys who lost there last 5 when they should be trying for belts.

What have I said that is "hating"? Is telling the truth "hate" now? I am sick and tired of Eddie Hearns telling us fighters are great while matching them soft. If you want to hang on Eddie's every word that is up to you, but that doesn't make it fact. And it doesn't make me a hater just because I choose to see the truth in things.

Your just letting your hatred of Hearn cloud your judgement. We all know where he’s at and the level he’s fighting, no ones hanging on his word

I like Lewis and I want him to do well but I honestly feel he needs to add quite a lot to his game if he wants to survive against the big guns at 140. For a start, he's way too flat footed and he doesn't appear to have a fight plan so he gets drawn into a tit for tat battle (when the opponent is above bum level). He's got decent power and good hands when he actually lets them go. Might be worth considering adding to or changing his team coz I feel he'll get blazed by most of the top 5/10. I wish Lewis all the best

I don’t have a problem with any of the boxers doing well but Hearn has a thing where his popular fighters either rob someone blind or sc**** by against their domestic rivals and then a less deserved fighter ends up getting the shot.
