  • Comments Thread For: Holiday Boxing Wishes for 2020

By Cliff Rold - Pretend for a moment Santa could bring boxing fans anything they wished for in 2020. Maybe Santa could even name one commissioner for a day. With a new year, new decade, dawning, the possibilities are endless. No two fans would likely wish for all the same things, as it should be. Some are the type who only get excited for the...

I'd rather watch Mayweather-Pacquaio II than Mayweather vs a mma fighter in boxing such as Khabib. Wishlist: Also wishful thinking, but Canelo vs Beterbiev, Canelo vs Charlo, Golovkin vs Charlo, Loma vs Davis, Fury-Wilder rematch winner vs Joshua, Beterbiev vs Bivol and Crawford vs Spence (if hopefully healthy Errol).

          1. Boxing is divided into tiers like baseball is so that the cream rises to the top in a more fair manner regardless of who you are affiliated with. Win x number of fights at the bottom tier I & move up to tier II. Win a tournament at tier II move up to tier III. Lose too many fights at tier III & you move back to tier II. Much more competitive fights at all levels in a tiered boxing world.

          2. One champion per division.

          3. Restructuring of divisions. There are too many lil guy divisions no one or few care about. 105 to 140, 35lbs, covers 10 of the 17 weight divisions & I suspect 90%+ of casuals couldn't name 5 title holders in these divisions at any given time. We should kill about half of those 10 lil guy divisions getting us to about 12 divisions. And I also think 265 should be the HW limit. I'm indifferent on creating a freakshow 265+ division, but I'd lean towards nah.

          4. With a tiered & one champion boxing world I think it would easier to make region, country & state titles matter more in boxing. I dig how on the UK scene winning the British or European title is a big deal. I think that should be commonplace in all countries & carry more prestige than it currently does in most places, the US included.

          5. A more detailed & improved scoring system with checks & balances in place to raise the good judges & weed out the bad judges systematically.

Having only one world champion per division would solve a lot of problems.

Competing networks and promoters would all have to fall in line and respect the pecking order.

But that's precisely why we don't have one champion per division...the powers that be have encouraged the rise of the WBO and IBF so that they can overhype and sell the lesser fighters in their stable that aren't good enough to be the top dog.

The list of great fights is easy.

                I wish for:

Forget 1 champ per weight class and just give us 1 CHAMP per organization.

                WBA to get rid of

                Super
                World
                Interim
                Gold Champions

IBF stripping Champions after only 2 weeks of winning belt. They should get a year to fight the IBF CRUMMY mando’s.

WBC to quit sucking Canelo’s C@ck. Quit changing their PED rules. Get rid of their Franchise belt. And quit making up all these sht hoochie mama Taco Bell belts.

WBO to quit sucking Bob Arums C@ck. Get a REAL PED program. Quit leaving #1 and #2 spots vacant and For Sale.

                Happy New Year!!!

One champion per division and less divisions. Enforce mandatory opponents and make them earn their shot by beating the best.

                    Spence vs. Crawford
                    Pac vs. Mikey and Mayweather
                    Canelo vs. GGG
                    Wilder vs. Fury and AJ
                    Loma vs. Tank
                    Beterbiev vs. Bivol
                    Smith vs. Plant
                    Charlo vs. Andrade or Jacobs
                    Ramirez vs. Taylor
