Comments Thread For: Fortuna To Fight For Vacant WBC Title, Injured Haney Named Champion In Recess

The sense from the moment a title fight was ordered between Devin Haney and Javier Fortuna was that it was destined to head to a purse bid. It turns out that won't be the case, though not at all good news for the defending titlist. BoxingScene.com has learned that Javier Fortuna will fight for the vacant World Boxing Council (WBC) lightweight title as reigning beltholder Devin Haney (24-0, 15KOs) is unable to follow through with a sanctioning body-mandated title defense. As first reported by BoxingScene.com, the bout was ordered in mid-November, with an assigned purse bid date of December 13 in the event the two sides could not come to terms.

Well that's bad news. I've seen Fortuna fight plenty of times and I've never been impressed.

The wbc is shameless. First they gift Haney a belt and give him an immediate mandatory, now they’re letting fortuna fight for the “vacant” belt cuz Haney is injured?

"...if she so chooses to fight for his old title whenever he’s able to return to the ring"... Ok, Boxingscene

Fortuna vs Campbell then fighting Haney is a good thing.

We get 2 solid Matches instead of 1.

Plus Haney can recover from the injury. This is win win for boxing and for Haney.

WBC will have three champions at lightweight.

Lomachenko went from WBC to WBC franchise champion immediately after winning the title before defending it once.

Haney won the WBC interim title, was immediately promoted to WBC champion without defending his interim title, defended the WBC title once and is now named champion in recess after his only defense.

Javier Fortuna will now fight for the WBC title.

Maybe they should have just the title with Lomachenko? LOL.

They should just make Loma full champion again...

Huge opportunity for Luke Campbell though, he’ll likely never get a better opportunity to win a world title.
