  • Comments Thread For: Josh Taylor Promoter: Lewis Ritson Fight is a Step Back

Barry McGuigan, the trainer of WBA, IBF junior welterweight champion Josh Taylor, has no interest in a potential fight with Lewis Ritson. Ritson's promoter, Eddie Hearn, proposed the idea of a fight with Taylor. He believes the fight would draw a sell-out crowd of 60,000 fans at St James' Park.

Massive fight money wise but also pointless. Think Ritson mat be mandatory but that's also laughable

Full unification with Ramirez next is the obvious move. Maybe followed by a move to 147?

Barry's right, it is a step back but a nice little earner for Taylor before the Ramirez fight. I like Ritson but he will cause Taylor no problems at all.

I’m still not convinced Ritson would beat Joe Hughes! Maybe Ritson should fight the golden contract winner (who will be more deserving of a shot than him anyway)

Wish all fighters had the mentality of Josh. Best fight the best to prove they are the best. Top Rank/PBC have ruined that concept with their protectionism marination bs.

Barry McGuigan has matched and managed Josh Taylor’s career better than Hearn has matched and managed any fighter he’s ever worked with.

I like Ritson, he has a fan friendly style. But he is nowhere near the elite level of the likes of Taylor, Prograis or Ramirez, and would lose badly against all 3. Barrios-Ritson may be a good fight for the WBA "regular" belt though.
I really hope we get to see Taylor either unify with Ramirez or rematch Prograis next, but I reckon his team may take a mandatory first in the hope of an easier fight which anyone would deserve after winning the WBSS.
