Comments Thread For: WBC Prez: Canelo, Pacquiao on My Side - No Pros in Olympics

I agree with the stance, Olympic boxing is about the up-and-coming amateurs not the seasons professionals

This seems like yesterday's news. Pros have been competing against amateurs for a decade almost. First in the WSB, then APB and from 2016 also in international and even national competitions.

The pros haven't even made an impact in the amateur game until Bakhodyr Jalolov became world champion recently. And Jalolov was knocking out people in world championships long before he turned pro.

Professional world champions like Hassan Ndam Njikam, Amnat Ruanroeng, Jonathan Romero and one Chinese boxer which name I don't recall, all lost to "amateurs". Some 20 pro boxers failed to even qualify for the Rio Olympics.

We're not talking about 17 year old kids going up for fun at the Olympics. Except for a few names most boxers have a long international track record. Otherwise they wouldn't even be close to qualifying.

Amateurs spar with pros all the time. Of course sparring is different from a bout but so is also a 3x3 bout under amateur rules from a 12 round pro bout under pro rules.

Did PAC said before that he is keen of competing in the Olympics to possibly give his country the Philippines its first Olympic gold medal?

There should be separation between amateur and professional boxing. Olympic boxing has been for amateurs and upcoming fighters so why allow professional boxers? I think IOC should concentrate on improving the officiating and rules than jumping to this destructive decision...

I agree with Suleiman for once.
I think a professional fighter has a certain advantage that a amateur hasn't seen yet even though most seasoned ams would beat a pro at amateur sports.
I just can't help but think their must be something else to this for Sullimuin to make such a strong stance.

Same reason he really didn't like APB - to Sulieman any kinda crossover represents a step towards the dangerous possibility of IBA (which was AIBA) taking a share of the pie and muscling in on what he considers his territory.

For the bullchit and corruption that's plagued amateur boxing at least they still have regular tourneys and a consistent unified ranking system for all fighters... imagine applying that to the pro ranks and how it'd impact on the money / privilege based stranglehold the sanctioning orgs currently hold on the sport.
