  • Comments Thread For: De La Hoya: I Didn't Recommend Canelo Move Up For Kovalev

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Oscar De La Hoya, who guides the career of Mexican superstar Saul "Canelo" Alvarez, admits that he didn't recommend that his boxer move up by two weight classes to fight WBO world champion Sergey Kovalev. Canelo will jump up by 15-pounds to the light heavyweight division on November 2, at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.

Toney started in the super welter, 40kg less than his last hw match...

Oscar feels that he has to "wash his hands" on this Canelo's decision...

It was Oscar who carefully built Canelo's career up to now (i.e. he carefully "protected" his progress so far)...

... obviously there's some sort of a rift between Canelo and his promoter at this point.

True, but Toney was never at his best in the HW division. Great defence and he was tough enough to ride out most big hits, but he couldn't hit near as hard as the big lads and the size/reach difference was a problem too against the best at the weight.

Toney is a freak of nature, a natural fighter who isnt bothered by weights. His body is different than Canelo’s.

Toney is a special fighter Canelo is not in the same stratosphere.

He is in for an ass whooping

When did Oscar build ****? By the time Oscar took the reigns of his company, Canelo was already a budding PPV star in his own right, lol.

Why folks keep going to Oscar, as if his say has any impact on what Canelo does is beyond me.

Whilst Toney had fantastic boxing skills, he was juicing from cruiserweight up and tainted his legacy, p*ssing hot on a couple of occasions.

... I guess you don't know anything about Oscar forced to pay $8.5 million dollar to Félix “Tutico” Zabala Jr. for signing Canelo back in 2009...

If Oscar has to come out and put a disclaimer on the decision, I'm sure he influenced it in some way.
