  • Comments Thread For: Joshua: I Blame Myself, Not My Trainer, For Loss To Ruiz

NEW YORK Anthony Joshua never considered changing trainers after Andy Ruiz Jr. upset him. Trainers often are used as scapegoats when boxers lose fights they're supposed to win. Loyalty to longtime trainer Rob McCracken and admitting that his seventh-round, technical-knockout loss to Ruiz was his own fault prevented the British superstar from hiring a new chief second.

If Ruiz is anything more than 3/1 I’m going to have to put my money down on Ruiz, even though I want Joshua to win.

I thought Joshua would be at least evens. He got smoked last time out, he doesn’t deserve to be a short favourite

A refreshing attitude to have in the modern age of "blame the coach for any failures". Whether it's team or solo sports; whenever there's a loss of form, there always seems to be someone behind the coach sharpening the headsman's ax. Nobody ever seems to question the professional sports-persons/teams ability to carry out instructions given to them in training and in the changing room.
I hope the last fight will always serve as a reminder to Joshua, of what can happen when you lose your professionalism inside the ropes. I'd bet that McCracken has been lecturing Joshua about self control and been getting paid no more than lip-service since the Klitschko fight. Sometimes mistakes have to be punished before people try to learn from them.

He pretty much wasn't following his trainers instructions that night so he couldn't really blame his trainer

AJ thinks and rationalizes way too much. He doesn't seem to have the mind of a prize fighter. He's going to be refining his strategy all the way up to the ring walk. I really think he's going to psyche himself out again.

Josh, let it go and fight. That was 3 months ago. Enough already. Excuses are for losers

If Joshua thinks he going to win a ‘back against the wall Xmas gift’ or a Hail Mary K.O. he better wake up and start apologizing to Ruiz

Glad he tried to get away from making more excuses.
