Comments Thread For: Golovkin: Abel's Father-Son Talk Is Just Him Playing Games!

LAS VEGAS Gennady Golovkin gave the most politically correct responses possible when asked about Abel Sanchez during a press conference to announce his new trainer. Golovkin thanked his former trainer for everything Sanchez taught him. He also characterized their longtime partnership as a positive experience.

Two sides to every story. In boxing I am going to lean towards the guy who takes the punches over the trainer 90% of the time. The 10% of the time is what happen to Khan. That boy quit and tried to throw his trainer under the bus. Also with Rigo claiming to have a broken hand and his corner protecting him. Trainers do alot of the dirty work. So I am happy to see the good ones get paid. However alot of trainers are one trick ponys with one star fighter who would be good with or without them and they get clout of off that.

Johnathon Banks, Golovkin’s new trainer, has been working with the Kazakhstan native for two weeks at Shane Mosley’s gym in Big Bear Lake, California. Mosley’s gym is in the same small town where Sanchez trained Golovkin for many years at Sanchez’ gym.
Great! So Abel and Banks can go for a coffee while GGG will be doing long-runs around the lake.

... people are mistaking GGG because of his wide smile -- the guy is as cold as a snake...

I'm going to go with Breadman on this one. If Able was getting 10% when GGG was a 6 figure fighter, then it should stay that way when GGG is an 8 figure fighter! I would've rather GGG simply say "I changed trainers because I feel stagnant, and I needed to make a change!" Then we wouldn't be talking about money! However, it was about money, and it's not a good look!

They need to keep it out of the press, it was wrong of Sanchez to come out of this. When it’s over it’s over.

Triple cheap showing his true colors now that Canelo whooped his àśś and gave him his first lost!

No more good boy, no more Mexican style and no more percentages for the trainer!

Banks bout to have Triple cheap throw more jabs and clinch his way to victory!

If GGG wanted new skills and Sanchez went as far as he could teach him then why ask Sanchez back at a discount answer is it was about the$ because for free someone who is done teaching still can’t teach

I completely disagree here. Golovkin has the right to want to renegotiate what he pays out. Abel has the right to refuse. I totally respect a trainers role, but we’re talking about a percentage here. No different than the sanctioning bodies reducing or capping out their percentage based on the purse of the fight. Whatever their percentage is for a 1 million dollar fight can be negotiated or reduced in a 500 million dollar fight.

And the same with a promoter. People always talk about fighters getting in position to take control of their finances and careers. If Crawford was in a spot to stay with Top Rank but demanding that they take a smaller cut of his purses or he walks to a different promoter good on him.

It’s negotiation man. It’s business at the end of the day. Everybody involved has the right to do what’s best for them. Abel didn’t like the terms and he walked. That’s that.
