Let's Get Back To Boxing Basics

The business of boxing has changed a lot. It has been banned from schools and there aren't many young people taking it up these days. And what's more concerning, the young people that are doing it, I believe, are not getting coached properly. Anyone can fight but young people have to learn the skill of boxing. Some people are naturally gifted but that talent has to be brought along as well; it can only happen if they are shown the correct fundamentals. [details]

That's only a minor problem with boxing and it's loss of popularity. There are so many HUGE problems in boxing that keeps it from becoming mainstream now, and that's really at the bottom of the list. Yes, we absolutely need good technical boxers, but a good technical boxer will not always equal popularity for the sport. Look at guys like Floyd Mayweather Jr, and Winky Wright, and B-Hop. All of them are EXCELLENT technical boxers, but none of them are popular guys. So, while I agree with the main point that he's making, that boxers need to be taught the basics, and so forth, as far as it concerns the popularity of the sport, I think there are a lot more things that can be done, and need to be changed to put boxing in the mainstream again. Obviously it being violent is NOT a problem, with UFC and the like growing in popularity. We all know what I'm talking about when I say there are other things that need to be done to make boxing more popular.

The other point that he makes, about needing a charasmatic guy, it's not something that can be taught in the gym. You either are, or you aren't when it comes to being charasmatic. Hell, we could just use a good "bad guy" like Tyson. Tyson was the least charasmatic person in the world, but he made boxing exciting. People watched to see him lose.

Finally, bringing up Roy when speaking of "technical" boxing is not really the best of ideas. Roy is very flawed technically.
