Wow, that sucks and could be a career ender. If so, much respect for a hell of a career. Not many in the game with better resume's than this man.

I think the Davis fight was going to end terribly for Mares so in a way him pulling out was a good thing. Could have made matters a lot worse.

    Much respect Abner!

I’d like to see him retire now, nothing else to prove...

I thought the Gervonta fight was gonna be his cashout fight anyway tbh

Supposedly he was offered winner of Frampton/Warrington, Selby or GRJ and went for Davis. I don't think he gets more money for this fight than say vs GRJ, yet he badly wanted the Davs fight for some reason. Who knows what he saw in Davis.

But yeah, he should retire now for sure.

He probably thought if he somehow upset Davis it would have gave him a much stronger legacy. Plus he’d have become one of the few Mexican fighters to become a four weight world champion.

He’d still be competitive with most of the top guys at 126, he’s too small for 130 though, I wouldn’t have enjoyed watching Gervonta body him

Yeah, but him going after Davis with the other options presented to hm makes me think this wasn't a cash out. He legitimately thought he could take Davis to deep waters and drown him. HIGHLY unlikely but that's what he felt.

But Tank is a beast who would have done bad bad things to him.

                  That's career ending

Sorry but you're a fool to continue. ESPECIALLY when he's had in the one eye and now the other

Why on earth would you risk losing your eye-site. It's just not worth it.

You've got your house payed for, wife, kids.

                  Just settle down lad. Jesus.

The injury that forced Abner Mares to withdraw last week from his fight against Gervonta Davis is much more serious than he initially led everyone to believe. Several media outlets reported that Mares suffered an elbow injury during training camp for their February 9 fight in Carson, California. Mares revealed Sunday on national television that a detached retina in his right eye is actually what caused him to pull out of their scheduled 12-rounder for Davis' WBA "super" world super featherweight title.
