Comments Thread For: Mikey Garcia: 'I Control My Career, Get Fights, Manage Myself'

Four-division champion Mikey Garcia's free agent status grants him latitude to work with powerful advisor Al Haymon, Matchroom's Eddie Hearn of DAZN, networks Showtime and FOX and various promoters he said during a Wednesday interview with Tha Boxing Voice hosted by Nestor Gibbs. "Everybody has a chance at a partnership with me because I am still a free agent. I don't have anything signed with anybody, I don't have any short term or long term [deals] with any promoter or any management company or anything like that. I have been working well with the PBC [Premier Boxing Champions] production...I was working well with Stephen Espinoza at Showtime. Now we're working with FOX," said Garcia.

Smart man Mikey is. I see the Spence fight being closer than what people are expecting. I guess his next 3or4 fights will be on Fox since he said he was working with showtime but now he’s working with Fox. Did he ask for the Spence fight or was it presented to him?

So basically you are Haymons with no sign on bonus from him. And for your easy loyalty your reward will be to get sacrificed in order to launch one if his signed fighters into stardom. Congratulations Mikey!

You should have taken Golden's offer. You just might have been pushed into Canelo stardom.

Now you will be a ruined fighter who might get offers from haymon to be his malignaggi for his fighters to step over on the way up.

Mikey is the most intelligent champion in history. Just a smart guy with some terrific instincts and street sense. Notice on views when anyone in his crew kinda misspeaks or is disrespectful, he quickly puts them in check n re-routes the conversation. The best thing about him is that he has a good heart and a sense of humility n a true humanitarian outlook. Number One Mikey attribute: he loves his fans and will do anything within reason for them. This has been true from Day One. A humble guy in a demanding entertainment biz. Well done.

Just like I been telling people. He doesn't have a contract with Haymons. He is doing it fight by fight. So far it has been working out good for him. If someone else blows him away with a better offer bye bye PBC at least for that fight.

He got himself to the position to be his own boss and took advantage. Like he said, Top Rank is the best at building a fighter's career and taking them to the championship level then he was ready to go on his own. Not every fighter can do that though and not every fighter is good enough to do that.

WTF can a promoter do for Mikey that he is not already doing for himself to be honest

Of course not everybody is fortunate to have a family that been in boxing their entire lives like Mikey so not everybody is able to be their own boss in this sport.

Mikey is way ahead of the game...

Well first of all he's not smarter than me, I'm a programmer ;-) secondly he just sold his career for what I'm guessing is a mediocre payday since Spence had zero star power.

He could have fought Linares and then topped that off with Loma and been undisputed p4p in the world. No instead he will now because known as that arrogant little guy that got tumbled by half good Spence.

I'm glad he's making money, but up til now, his best fight has been Broner. If he beats Spence, more power to him. If Spence cripples him, he won't look like much of a genius.
