  • Comments Thread For: BoxingScene's 2018 Upset of the Year: Harrison vs. Charlo

By Cliff Rold - Some guys are there to make a good show. And lose. That's the role they are chosen for and expected to play matched with established names or rising stars with their eyes on bigger things. Heading into December 22nd, the most anticipated fight at Jr. middleweight already felt penciled in. Sometime in 2019, WBC 154 lb. titlist Jermell Charlo would square off with unified WBA/IBF titlist Jarrett Hurd...

What about Hassan Mwakino vs Sam Eggington? Picking Charlo v Harrison doesn't sit right with me when the result was so controversial.

Navarrete vs. Dogboe is a bigger upset.

We've seen Tony Harrison fight before and we knew he had skills, he just had stamina problems in the past. But an upset wasn't out of the question if he stuck to a gameplan.

I doubt anyone, other than people living in Mexico, have seen Navarrete fight before. I certainly haven't and just by looking at his boxrec, he didn't exactly fight top level opponents. Meanwhile Dogboe defeated champion Magdaleno and ran through Cesar Juarez. This looked like a lamb being lead to slaughter. It turned out completely different. I was really shocked by what happened.

Why is it controversial? For most of the fight, I was thinking to myself "what are these commentators talking about???". I thought Charlo won 1, 2, 11, and 12 definitively and there was a swing round in the middle that could have gone either way. I think most people were just shocked that they didn't give Charlo the decision because he was the house fighter.

It was definitely an upset though. I almost wasn't even gonna watch the card because I expected both Charlos to dominate.

Personally, I thought Alvarez vs Kovalev was a pretty good upset, especially with Alvarez stopping him. Did not see that coming at all.

Eggington is a club fighter at best, with his best win being over an old as hell Malignaggi. It was a mild upset at best.

Hell no. Fight was too controversial to be upset of the year.

My man Mammoth mentioned Donaire-Burnett yea i didnt expect that lol. Im a Donaire fan so i can live with the result.

Navarette over Dogboe was mentioned and that’s probably the biggest upset. I knew he was a live underdog but I didnt expect him to win the way he did. It was pretty much a domination.

Stephen WhiteBreadMan is just defending his shout-outs for Charlo bros being PFP guys after losing to average folk.

I'm sure Win of the Year goes to Jermall Charlo for STUNNING, DOMINANT PERFORMANCE over HIGHLY RATE MATT CARROTWAD

Not sure if you count an injury stoppage as an 'upset' exactly though, I mean Burnett was up in most eyes though Nonito was doing plenty of decent work.

Dogboe - Navarette might be the best call, though Dogboe only really came to prominence this year and was still something of an unknown quantity, so actually I'd maybe pick Dogboe's own win over Magdaleno back in April as the bigger upset. Certainly it surprised me more.

And like you say Harrison vs Charlo makes no sense for an 'upset of the year' with many, even most, thinking Jermell deserved the nod... hell, in my mind the Jermall vs Korobov fight counts as a bigger upset (in terms of the fight running counter to most people's expectations) despite Jermall getting the nod
