Comments Thread For: Mares calls Gary Russell best at 126 over Santa Cruz, Frampton

Three-division champion Abner Mares said he believes left-handed WBC 126-pound champion Gary Russell is better than WBA "super" and WBO interim counterparts Leo Santa Cruz and Carl Frampton during Saturday's initial episode of "Inside PBC Boxing" on FOX. The 33-year-old Mares (31-3-1, 15 KOs) serves as a lead analyst on the Premier Boxing Champions' studio show along with two-time and current WBC 147-pound champion Shawn Porter.

He probably is but he has zero supporters because lomachenko beat him and that means if russell does well then it reflects well lomachenko. He literally has no fans on here compared to the other americans. Can say olde' dramashow is stirring the pot again but people should have a think about it.

I'm a big fan of GRJ, and his defeat to Lomachenko looks way better now, when compared to all the guys who simply quit in the ring, or got KO'd! He needs to be in the ring with LSC next!

Yep, and hes probably improved since then too, just like canelo learnt from losing to floyd. Losing isnt always a bad experience long term.

I might agree if Gary fought more than once a year v TBA. Gary has the Mexican style figured out. Mares is no mystery to him, Jojo was better at the weight. Still, Gary is leaving lots of names to dispute his claims. Too inactive, with a glaring loss.

Nope. Losing is not that bad, especially early in your career! Lomachenko learned a lot from that Salido fight too!

Yeah i forgot abiut that ha, thats an even better example. No reason russell cant have a great career and if he does then that loss will seem a long time ago.
