Comments Thread For: Giving Thanks For a Boxing Dream Come True

By Lyle Fitzsimmons - It's a tradition my wife and I started when our son, Ryan, now 10, was far younger. Each night as we put him to bed, we'd have him list whatever good things had happened to him that day whether at school, home or anywhere in between as well as a few things for which he was thankful. And though the answers to the latter question still tend to be the same a lot of days, we'd at least like to believe the nightly exchange gets him to take stock of the many good things in his life...

    Thanks Lyle!

Very nice article, and congratulations on your success picking bouts. You are among the few that opening list your rate of accuracy.

Well its a start isn't it. But... you shouldn't get the same acclaim for picking the winner of a mismatch (95/5 anyone? ) ... and picking winners of evenly matched fights.

Put it this way, betting odds being miserly in boxing, I'm pretty sure that if you put $10 on every one of Lyle's bets that you'd still come out losing (probably) or only very slightly ahead.

To make any money from boxing bets, you'd have to either have:

a/ inside knowledge such as where the big money is going or some unknown knowledge that is detrimental or advantageous for one fighter
b/ superior boxing knowledge such as Breadman (notice how he even says that Mikey will likely lose against Spence because his nose won't hold out) or
c/ a strategy of betting on high odds upsets by doing the research to sort out the possible upsets from the sure-fire losses (which obviously heavily outnumber the upsets)

Show me any boxing fan/writer who has a long winning record picking the winner of fights where the predicted loser is no worse than 2/1 against in the pre-fight betting and I'll heap all the acclaim possible on that odd****ker.

Sounds like an amazing gig to have. Really would be a dream come true to be professionally involved in boxing. Maybe just not as a professional boxer. That’s the hardest thing in the world to do lol.
