Comments Thread For: Monaghan 'Embarrassed' By Browne KO Loss; Readier For Barrera

The biggest fight of Sean Monaghan's boxing career was over before he even knew what hit him. Marcus Browne, a regular sparring partner and friend, drilled Monaghan with a straight left hand that dropped him just 39 seconds into their nationally televised fight in July 2017. Monaghan managed to make it out of that disastrous first round, but Browne hurt him badly with a right hook only 30 seconds into the following round.

A quick KO is easy to write off. Its the long beatings that ruin fighters. Barrera is a methodical guy, I'm sure he'll take his time.

Barrera's going to be no easier for him. Let's face it, Monaghan kind of sucks and only ever made it onto TV because he has a big fanbase willing to cheer him on while he knocks cans over. I say this every time I get the chance, the failure to match him up with Joe Smith Jr. right after Smith beat Hopkins is the biggest matchmaking fail I can think of in recent memory. Both popular white collar guys from New York, both unbeaten and riding high with fanpleasing styles. If they made the fight right then it would have printed money. Instead, they both bite off more than they can chew by fighting against opponents who are much more skilled than them (presumably for much less money than they would have made fighting each other) and lost their unbeaten records, their belts and most of the credibility they had as light heavyweight contenders in the process, as both of them lost badly, Monaghan especially so. Now that big money matchup has gone up in smoke and might not ever even happen at all if Monaghan catches the ass beating from Barrera that I think he's going to get.

Just met Sullivan this past weekend. What a nice kid! Hope he gets a convincing win and gets another title shot.
