Comments Thread For: Gary Russell vs. Leo Santa Cruz is Ordered By The WBC

The WBC ordered the best featherweight fight that can be made in boxing during its annual convention Wednesday in Kiev, Ukraine. The Mexico City-based sanctioning organization announced that its featherweight champion, Gary Russell Jr., must make a mandatory defense of his title against fellow champion Leo Santa Cruz. Russell-Santa Cruz is one of the fights Premier Boxing Champions' Al Haymon wants to make at some point in 2019, but the WBC's order could expediate scheduling that 126-pound showdown and make it the next fight for each champion.

This has been in the works for a while (the match up). Makes a lot of sense to happen next. Now, if GRJ doesn't want to fight until 2019, that's fine but hopefully LSC still gets in a fight before years end.

Don't get me wrong, this is a great fight and I love a unification as much as anyone; but how can the WBC mandate a defence against a champ from another governing body?
If this can be done here why doesn't the same get done for AJ-Wilder? At least it would put an end to the accusations, half-truths and lies being peddled by Hearn and Finkel.

Sometimes they just think “ah **** it why not” think Canelo vs GGG and kovalev vs Stevenson as examples. I think a special request needs to be made

Leo Santa Cruz holds the WBC 'Diamond' belt, its basically a mandatory spot for the real WBC champ.

So they are going to fight in 2019. What happened to wilder vs fury rumored stacked undercard. All the people that was supposed to be on the card are getting fights lined up else where.

Don’t get me wrong wilder vs fury is a interesting fight but I was way more interested in the rumored undercard.
