  • Comments Thread For: Kellerman: Alvarez Disconnected Kovalev's Head From His Legs

HBO expert analyst Max Kellerman was blown away by the explosive ending on Saturday night in Atlantic City. In a stunning turn of events, Eleider Alvarez scored a spectacular seventh round knockout of Sergey Kovalev to capture the WBO light heavyweight title at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas.

You know I’m starting to get the feeling that this forum takes a single event or one interview and then writes 20 articles on it. It’s getting a bit ridiculous guys

I’m not sure if Kovalev is necessarily done just yet like some others think. He was winning on the scorecards by a good margin. He probably has one last shot to stay at the elite level but if he loses again he’s officially done at being at the top. He should take 1 tune up fight first before he does the rematch with Alvarez & he needs to work on his stamina. Since the first Ward fight or maybe a fight or so before that I noticed he was getting tired already by like the 6th or 7th round.

        Yes

Also I thought Kovalev looked mediocre at weigh in and he tired and Alvarez caught him but maybe Alvarez is on something too, has he looked as strong before at age 34?

Oh yes however people run from him and he’s a boxer first. He has always had some power there just protected it because he doesn’t have 2 knuckles in his right hand

It was weird because HBO crew had Alvarez outboxing Kovalev for the majority of the early rounds. I did not see it that way and thankfully neither did Harold. I was wondering why they were blowing Alvarez so hard. Then to justify their commentary, Alvarez KO's Kovalev. What a ***** show HBO commentary was last night.

While watching the 7th round before the right hand landed I was saying Kovalev looks tired. His stamina is not what it once was. This may end up being the upset of the year and or the knockout of the year

It's good to be optimistic, but it's better to be realistic.
Based on his power, Kovalev may have been overrated in the first place. Without getting into a debate about his level of opponents during his unbeaten run, we can agree that he showed questionable conditioning & an inability to adjust during the first fight with Ward. During the second fight he showed a lack of will. He managed to put together a couple of comeback wins, but he seemed like a shell of himself last night. As Kovalev gets older, It's hard to think he will be able to get into better physical condition than he was in last night. If he was psychologically damaged by the losses to Ward, as some fans suggest, then how will he be able to deal with being devastatingly dropped and definitively stopped by Alvarez?
