Comments Thread For: Gary Russell May Move Up Following Joseph Diaz Fight

Gary Russell Jr. will make just the third defense of his WBC featherweight title in 25 months against unbeaten challenger Joseph Diaz on Saturday night. Win or lose, it might also be Russell's last. Frustrated by a failure to make a unification bout at 126 pounds, Russell said Thursday he'll consider moving up if he beats Diaz.

How can he be frustrated by a lack of unification matches? He fights once a year!!

I'd rather see him stay at 126. I think there's better matches there and also coming from 122. He's pound for pound talent but has to be fighting more.

What will he do if he loses? I could see him simply retiring

How is he blaming politics? He fights once a year so of course he ha to fight his mandatories. Santa Cruz and Mares have the same promoter. Frampton and Selby used to have the same promoter. It ain’t politics

Both are with Haymon so shouldn't be a problem anywhere. We can compare how Davis deal with GRJ like how Loma did.

Gary can only fight Berchelt in 130 as he has same organization belt whih GRJ will not choose to do. Same for Tank Davis - both too dangerous.
So I don't see him moving up unless for a fight with Machado and alike.

What was it a year ago when the PBC spokesman came out and flat out admitted they wanted him to fight more but that Russell simply doesn't want to take fights. His long inactivity is on him, he's signed with Haymon and there are TONS of fights at and around his weight class so how can politics be an issue making fights when everybody else is getting fights and PBC is saying he is the one turning down fights. He's been talking retirement and has excuses for days for why he doesn't fight. He had to take the JoJo fight because they were going to strip him otherwise it would of been another long layoff and then fight against a bum. He turned pro with so much skills and hype and has never lived up to it. Has no hunger or itch to be great and when he loses to JoJo I can see him flat out retiring or taking 2-4 year lay off.
