Comments Thread For: Magdaleno-Dogboe and the State of Jr. Featherweight

By Cliff Rold - In this case, maybe it was all about the foundation. Wilfredo Gomez wasn't the first Jr. featherweight champion. The division had a short life in the 1920s and was reborn, first with the WBC and then the WBA, in the 1970s. Bazooka is the one who made it matter. Jr. featherweight was the house Wilfredo Gomez built. From 1977 to 1983, he defended the title 17 times...

The figures that mattered at 122 : Leo Santa Cruz, Frampton and Quigg ducked Guillermo Rigondeaux and left the division, I remember there was plenty of interest for these fights at the time -- those were needed to keep jr. featherweight relevant, a shame because if I remember correctly all of them entered the P4P at some point ( minus Quigg. Obviously).

122 has become so barren that Guillermo had to leap over two weight classes just to land a meaningful fight with Vasyl Lomachenko.

Now after Santa Cruz, Frampton and Quigg moved out the division jr. featherweight has some new faces in : IBF champion Ryosuke Iwasa, WBC Rey Vargas, WBO Jessie Magdaleno and as mentioned in the article WBA 'Regular' Champion Danny Roman.

Mr. Rold posed the question : Is there a star in the bunch?

I hope that it be Isaac Dogboe, if he you watch his fights on youtube; you would of thought hes a superstar already in Ghana.

I think Danny Roman is very talented and underrated but I am also skeptical that he can become a big star the way his career is going, Magdaleno has Toprank behind him so there hope for him, and WOW! who remembers Rey Vargas? lmao.
