  • Comments Thread For: Caleb Truax vs. James DeGale - CompuBox Historical Review

Caleb Truax, normally a slow starter, created huge momentum in rounds 1-5 (110-44 overall, 20-4 jabs, 90-40 power) with constant aggression, much better volume (67 per round to 40.8 during that stretch) and ring generalship as he maneuvered James DeGale toward the ropes and pounded away at every opportunity.

Great win by DeGale, he and Truax literally went head to head in a bloody war. Worst part of the fight was Robert Byrd’s terrible affiliating. He seemed to encourage Caleb’s smothering and not give DeGale away of keeping the action going. The point deduction was rediculous. PBC and Showtime keep raising the bar on these fights. This is disruption at its finest!!

Terrible stinker of a fight. Both B level fighters head butts and all. Oh and Robert Byrd should retire already. He stinks too.

Did you do enough to beat the champion?

That decision was another black eye for boxing.

what fight did you watch? one guy was always smothering himself, had no leverage on his punches and didn't know what to do when he got clinched.
the other was afraid to throw punches, couldn't control the distance at all and was clinching whenever truax was close to him. no effective lateral movement, no stiff jab to keep him at range. and was occasionally just throwing ineffective flurries.

                very ugly fight.

We all agree it was an ugly fight, but I am not going to be vague in my review. Caleb kept coming forward and smothering his own work hopefully we all agree. Clearly he was the stronger yet highly ineffective fighter in much of the fight. DeGale wasn’t prime but to say he was ineffective the whole fight is unfair. If he was completely ineffective why was closing the distance that important despite Caleb’s inability to land much meaningful in the 2nd half of the fight? The headbuts were terrible and threatened the fight. DeGale initiates much of that early contact. For that Robert Byrd should have been concentrating on creating more space for both fighters. It was the refs job to pretty up the action. What were YOU watching that you didn’t see any of this. No one said it was beautiful, clearly the fight needed less hugging (Truax) and when DeGale tried to do something about it the official deducted a point. Ultimately DeGale just showed up better in the final championship rounds as the rest of the fight was close. Why are you so upset? Are you a Golden Gopher or something. Wasn’t pretty, but it was gutsy for both fighters.
