Comments Thread For: Cormier is Baffled: Why Would Mayweather, at 41, Try MMA?

UFC light heavyweight champion Daniel Cormier has no idea why Floyd Mayweather Jr. would even entertain the idea of taking part in MMA. A few years ago, Ronda Rousey was the biggest star in mixed martial arts, while Floyd Mayweather was the biggest star in boxing. Mayweather, 41, retired from boxing last August after stopping UFC superstar Conor McGregor in the tenth round of a boxing match. The win took his record to a perfect 50-0.

It's an obvious publicity stunt to keep his name relevant. With a boxing fight lined up Mayweather is irrelevant. His promotional company hasn't been able to even conjure up a PPV event without him on it. Al Haymon essentially set the blueprint for how advisers/managers can simply work directly with television networks.

hmmmm clues in the name buddy...'the _____ team'

He'll have one exhibition match (which it will be regardless of whether they say it's real or not) and UFC won't want to fork out all of the cash for his side, so he'll do a deal that makes him a shareholder in UFC, probably Conor will do some kind of deal too. It will lay the ground for UFC's move into boxing, which Mayweather will be a part of as a partner. Dana talked a lot about respecting Mayweathers business sense in the last deal, Dana has been clear about a move into boxing, Conor is looking to move more to the business side, it all adds up.

There's also these UFC/Joshua rumors to consider too. AJ seems very fond of Floyd. I wonder what type of influence he has with him.

They were very buddy buddy at that press event in the UK, Joshua was at his gym hanging out for the McGregor camp, then this week he makes that Tyson/Floyd comment.

Yep I agree, it did cross my mind that Mayweather and AJ get along and I recall AJ joking that he wouldn’t sign to TMT but that they could do some kind of deal in the future.
