Oscar Valdez's victory on Saturday night against the much heavier Scott Quigg came at quite a price for the defending WBO featherweight champion. Quigg weighed in last Friday at 2.8-pounds over the featherweight limit. A deal was reached for the contest to move forward, but it was evident that Valdez suffered an injury the contest, as he was bleeding heavily from his mouth.

I understand Quigg was the heavier man and was completely unprofessional in that regard - but based on his last three fights, Valdez won't last long. He stands toe to toe way too often and seems to want to be known as a warrior. Which is fine. But your longevity and most importantly, your overall health will take a huge nose dive. I hope he has a timely recovery and stays in good spirits.

Unfortunately, some boxers have that very same approach.
1. You can only retire richer if you perservere and are exciting long enough to see those checks/big fights. (There are no mega fights at the lower weightclasses that will rival a lottery win)
2. There are other ways to increase your market value outside of a rock em sock em style
3. These smaller fighters fade faster than others because they depend on speed and reaction time. Unfortunate for them, those are the first to go - naturally. Let alone via getting in toooo many wars. By then, youre no longer CHOOSING to go toe to toe, youre forced to. (Arturo gatti was a victim - R.I.P.)

MOST of the time, those that want to be known as a warrior, get what they want. But they ONLY become known as a just a warrior. There are far too many older boxers that constantly regret that approach. Quality of life during and after boxing is key.

It's not like Valdez can't improve defensively. He's got a good style and his heart is tremendous. He does good with lateral movements but does tend to get hit quite a few times. I think he's fine if he just fine tunes his defensive skills.

Damn, I don't really like the language they are using.

"We just hope he gets better, we'll do what ever the doctor says" I hope it was traslation. but it almost sounds like guilt
