  • Comments Thread For: Hurd: Had to Fight Lara Before Charlo to Prove I'm Guy to Beat

NEW YORK Jarrett Hurd understands why boxing fans want to see him fight Jermell Charlo. Hurd has no problem facing Charlo, but it makes more sense to him to beat Erislandy Lara first and then challenge Charlo. Lara, the WBA super welterweight champion, is widely viewed as the champion to beat within the 154-pound division.

SALUTE to Jarrett Hurd! I don't know if he can cut-off the ring, and make it a dogfight with Lara, but being a champion helps! Maybe he gets some love like Canelo did! Meanwhile, where's Nathaniel Gallinore! I hope he gets a fight with J-Rock! 154, Let's Go!

Lara is obviously better than Trout but he has got a tough fight here, Hurd is relentless and huge for the weight. I lean towards Lara for a very difficult UD.

Heard J-ROCK turned down Gallimore for Ishe Smith, lmao.
Tony Harrison would fight Gallimore tho.

          Yeah! Here's the interview:

PC: Julian Williams is a guy who you have made it clear you are interested in fighting. What did you think of his last performance against Ishe Smith?

NG: Man, Julian Williams is whack, man. He’s not a good fighter. That’s what they do; all of the managers and promoters build them up, get them to the top, and then we see what happens to them. He’s not a good fighter. It’s just like how Lubin was built up. They pampered him all the way to the title shot and then he got knocked out; brutally knocked out. Those guys are not real fighters. None of those guys are real fighters. They are just actors until they get in the ring.

PC: When you get the opportunity to get in the ring with one of these 154-pounders who you feel aren’t real fighters, do you think that’s what will separate you from them is the fact that you think you are a real fighter?

NG: Yep! That’s exactly what will separate us. It’s going to be my time. I’m just waiting on the opportunity. In fact, I’m going to demand my opportunity because all of them is just ducking anyway. I’m in the rankings now and they will go down the line and pass me up to fight somebody else. They won’t fight me. Julian Williams said he was supposed to fight me before he fought Ishe Smith, but then he said Ishe Smith asked for him and he took it. Ishe Smith is old. And then he didn’t even look good against Ishe Smith. Ishe got some work out of him. An old guy like that, you should dominate him and knock him out. You going back and forth, he hitting you and you hitting him; come on, man. Ishe Smith is old and he’s just not good.

PC: That was my understanding as well is that the fight between you guys was done, and I don’t know what happened, but then the Smith fight came about.

NG: I’m not buying any of that. They saw the tape and they were scared. They just using that “we don’t know what happened and why the fight didn’t come off” as a stunt. He going to write on Instagram, “Ishe Smith people offered me more money.” And then he said that people said I was easy work. Okay, if I was easy work, why didn’t you take the fight with me then and then fight Ishe Smith? Time will tell. They are going to have to get in there with me. I’m going to make it where they can’t dodge me or duck me. They going to have to fight me. I’m going to keep moving up the rankings and they are going to have to fight me.

PC: Ideally, when would you like to be back in there fighting?

NG: Man, I was supposed to fight under my management teammate Sergey Lipinets. He’s fighting Mikey Garcia and I was supposed to fight “J Rock” as the co-main event on that card. I don’t know what happened about that. They said that he said he wanted the fight, but somebody else fell in that slot. I think Barthelemy fell into that spot or someone. So I think me and “J Rock” probably fight on a different card; headline a different card in late January or February. I’m just waiting on my management team to give me the word. Everybody has been on vacation, so I will talk to them soon.

Lara way more skill however Hurd is a stampede.....

Lara has all the tools and definitely has the Cuban pedigree. Notwithstanding all the many gifts Lara has, Hurd is a SMW fighting as SWW. Hurd can punch and is relentless. It's like hitting a heavy bag that can knock you out. Not an easy task for anyone. If Lara can't maintain distance and fight off Hurd it may not end well. Remember Angulo was able to find Lara and Hurd is definitely better so this may not bode well for Lara whose also a bit older and slower.

I agree. Big props to Hurd for taking the risky fight. But the fact that Gallinore might be one of the more deserving options for a Charlo fight goes to show you how shallow the division has gotten. I would prefer Charlo fight that Polish guy Maciej Sulecki because at least he has Grzegorz Proksa, Jack Culcay and Hugo Centeno on his resume. Gallinore has a whole lot of nothing. But either way its just a stay busy fight until Charlo gets the winner of Hurd/Lara. After that Charlo needs to move up.

Hurd doesn't have to KO power tp get you out of there. But he has that wear you out power. If he hit you enough times you're gonna drop. But Lara is no Tony Harrsion or even Trout. Those guys are there to be hit. Lara is not gonna stand and trade like those guys were.

No, I want Gallimore to face J-Rock Williams. Gallimore doesn't deserve a title shot yet! The WBC ordered #1 Maciej Sulecki to face #2 Vanes Martirosyan in an eliminator, but I don't know if the deal has been signed! I still think 154 is a very good division!
