Comments Thread For: Linares: A lot of Young Fighters Want To Knock My Head Off!

WBA lightweight champion Jorge Linares (43-3) held a public workout last Friday at City Athletic Boxing in Las Vegas as he made his final preparations for his January 27th HBO headlining showdown against Mercito Gesto (31-1-2). The fight takes place at The Forum in the Los Angeles suburb of Inglewood. The 32-year-old Linares worked under the guidance of his long time trainer Ismael Salas. He said that this was one of the best training camps of his long career.

    is Linares overrated?

The guy still doesnt have a signature win and didnt really fight very dangerous opponents in the last couple of years. Crolla, Campbell and Mitchell are alright, but they were not dangerous to linares in terms of stylistic matchups and power.

Dont forget that he has 3 KO losses, the guy does many things right. Very fast handspeed, puts his punches together well, good counter over the jab with his uppercut, decent footwork,

but at the same time he has too many weaknesses to hang at the elite level.

His offense gets predictable, after a while he throws the same combinations and gets timed. Campbell got used to his offense after a while.

He lacks power. He can knock you down by landing very quick shots, which opponents are not anticipating, but he doesnt really throw with mean intention. He sacrifices power for speed. In the DeMarco fight, he was landing many, many shots flush on demarco, but demarco just shrugged them off and kept moving forward.

Prone for cuts and overall fragile. Thompson lands a good overhand right and rattles linares whole body, Salgado lands a lead left hook and linares body shuts down, DeMarco gets pummeled the whole fight, lands some shots, but linares rolls most of the punches. Then, he lines up the left straight, lands flush and linares is again hurt and gets finished off.

If Gesta didnt improve from the Vazquez fight, he has no shot against Linares, but I dont think Linares is on the same level as lomachenko or Garcia.
