  • Team Malignaggi: "Broken Jaw/Nose Reports Are False"

Sal LoNano, manager of Paulie Malignaggi, confirmed to BoxingScene that contrary to numerous reports in the media, Paulie did not suffer a broken jaw or a broken nose in his bout with Miguel Cotto. Apparently a blood vessel popped under the right eye of Malignaggi, causing swelling to the right side of his face, and it also caused blood to pour down the back of his throat and through his nose for a majority of the bout. [details]

I think its great that boxingscene has expanded and built up a good relationship with certain fighters including Pauli Malignaggi, who although losing on saturday, gave Cotto props for the fight and giving him the opportunity from what I understand. He also put on a great show of courage apparently, and if he had pressed the final rounds he may have taken a close decision over Miguel.

That was not possible as Cotto dominated the fight and won 8-4, Cotto was the better fighter, that was obvious.

They make no mention of the broken orbital bone. Does this mean that Paulie didn't break it? I hope so as that would mean we would get to see him sooner than if he did break it. Also does anyone know how his hands held up.

No matter he was lumped the **** up.He showed me something though he is very tough.......Cotto simply battered him most of the evening.......I only caught the last 4 rounds or so due to the Tarver/Hopkins fight though.

There were about 10 of us in my uncles home theater 120" screen with HDTV. He purchased both fights and we switch back and forth most of the night. Caught about 4 uninterupted Hopkins-Tarver rounds before the Cotto fight started then we mostly watched the Cotto fight with Hopkins-Tarver between rounds. But he recorded both on his DVR so we watched the entire Hopkins-Tarver fight after.

I think orbit bone and the broken blood vessel go hand in hand, but the blood vessel breaking in his face was under the eye, which caused his face to swell, like Vargas in the second Mosley fight.

Each of your eyeballs lies within an orbit (eye socket), an open cavity in the skull that is bordered by strong bone, some of which is very thin. If your eye or eye region is hit, as by a fist or ball, it can cause a sudden increase in pressure within the orbit. The result can be a blowout fracture of the orbit -- a break in one of the thinner orbit bones and the possibility of the nerves and eye muscles in the orbit being pushed through the break. A blowout fracture of the orbit can be a very serious injury.
                    Symptoms

If any blood vessels have been broken, blood will rush into the tissues and cause a classic swollen "black eye." After the swelling goes down, the eye may appear to be sunken back because the tissues have been pushed out of the orbit through the broken bone. You may also have double vision (diplopia) whenever you look up or down. The lower part of the cheek and some of the upper back teeth on the same side as the fractured orbit may become numb. Very rarely, severe pain and nausea occur immediately after the injury.
