  • Comments Thread For: John Murray Part 2: Chronicles Career, Talks Lack of Characters

Although Thompson was talking about Dr. Gonzo, AKA Oscar Zeta Acosta, played brilliantly by Benicio del Toro in the film adaptation of the book, the quote above could have easily been applied to Manchester's John Murray during the time when the former English, British, EBU lightweight Champion and WBA world title challenger was mixing fighting and winning titles with embarking on epic benders.

I used to enjoy watching Murray. Seen him fight live a few times.

Reading the story and he touches on his fights in the MGM..i'd totally forgot he was on the Mayweather/De La Hoya card.

To be honest, while he was an entertaining enough domestic fighter he has a ******, immature idiot for p1ssing away a career. Now he sounds like he is just trying to justify being completely unprofessional.

It's sad that he is more legendary for his drinking sessions than for his boxing.

        Kind of embarrassing, really.

I really enjoyed this 2 part analysis of his own career. Refreshingly honest & down to earth. Murray at his peak was great to watch, a never say die pressure fighter who thrived in the heat of battle.

He was a nightmare to fight for anyone just below world level and whilst I'm not saying he could have beaten a dominant champion or reigned for many defences, I can't help thinking in today's age of multiple titles that with the right matchmaking he could still have won one of the 4 world belts, despite the indiscipline with his drinking.

Sad to hear he's all but lost his sight in one eye but it's good that he seems to have come to terms with it. He certainly left it all in the ring when he fought. Thanks for an entertaining career JM
