Comments Thread For: Gary Russell Will Have Voluntary, Then Must Face Joseph Diaz

WBC featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr. (28-1, 17 KOs) will make a voluntary defense of his world title on a date in February, according to World Boxing Council President Maurcio Sulaiman. However, the sanctioning body's leader states that Russell would then have to make a mandatory defense against undefeated challenger Joseph 'JoJo' Diaz (25-0, 13 KOs).

How do fighters expect to maintain or better themselves by fighting so infrequently? They say you never forget how to ride a bike, but if you take a year between riding one, you are going to be shaky for a while.

GRJ, if he's serious about a rematch with Lomachenko should either A) ask for a Loma rematch now, or B) seek a fight with Tank Davis @ 130! Tank is not on the level with Loma, but both are Maryland/DC fighters, and it should sell well, and GRJ will still maintain his 126 title. Other than LSC or Mares, there's no one to fight @ 126!

This is not news, Gary Russell been said dat since last November :

“We wanna get another bout in sometime in February and we wanna go back again in May.”

“The WBC already sanctioned the mandatory challenger, Jo Jo Diaz. I’m curious if Golden Boy and them is really willing to put him in the ring with Mr. Gary Russell Jr.”

“Anybody that’s in the featherweight division – Abner Mares, Leo Santa Cruz, Carl Frampton – it doesn’t matter.”

WBC featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr [28(17)-1(0)] is looking to finally kick on in 2018. Arguably the ‘forgotten champion’ of

Since Russell is looking at May, lets get it on the Canelo-GGG undercard baby!

Truth. I hadn't ridden a bike in about two years and the next time a rode one I did a 720 and double-flipped off a bridge all because I couldn't swerve out of the way of a banana.

                  Then my bike exploded
