  • Comments Thread For: BoxingScene Upset of the Year 2017 - Truax Shocks DeGale

by Cliff Rold - For weeks, everyone knew IBF super middleweight titlist James DeGale would be making his return on December 9th. After a rough, thrilling draw in a unification bout against Badou Jack in January, the "TBA" next to his opponent listing signaled this wasn't about finding a serious challenger. DeGale would work off the rust and look to bigger things in 2018. Opponent Caleb Truax wasn't even formally announced until less than a month before the fight...

I agree with the pick. There are are other upsets such as Sor Rungvisai vs. Chocolatito, Horn vs. Pacquiao. The difference though is that Sor Rungvisai and Jeff Horn are actually good. We just didn't know anything about them. Or we didn't know enough about them. All We knew about Sor Rungvisai was that he fought Cuadras, and Horn is an undefeated Olympian. Truax , on the other hand, is a journeyman fighter who has been stopped at 160 by Jacobs and then at 168 by Dirrell in 1 round. He was brought in as a tune up fight for DeGale and he worked him over.

One of the most embarrassing losses I've ever seen.

Very good pick, I never gave Truax ANY chance of winning this fight.

I gave Horn ZERO chance of winning and Truax less than zero.

Saunders should be on this list for shear dominance. He looked insanely good and made Lemuix look like he should RETIRE! Those other guys at least can hold their head up high losing controversial decisions...

It was bad losing to a scrub. But IMO supposly being very good / elite and looking like dog sht or worse quitting is more embarrassing like what Lemuix and Rig.

And that guy who got Knocked the F-out in like 7 seconds after talking soo much sht to Charlo.

I can't even call Bellew vs. Haye an upset because of the injury. Yes, on paper it was, but Haye tore his Achilles and couldn't fight and that affected the outcome. I don't even count that as a legit win for Bellew. It was a total fluke.

Sadam Ali vs. Cotto, on paper it was, but Cotto was old and inactive and age finally showed in that fight.

Those losses were bad, but those guys were either underdogs or slight favorites.

Degale was a MASSIVE favorite. It was something like 16-1. That's what makes it embarrassing.

Had Truax been a fighter that was under the radar and someone we hadn't seen fight before, then the lose would be excusable. But Truax is a journeyman, and we've seen him lose to a faded Jermain Taylor, Danny Jacobs and Anthony Dirrell. He was brought in as a tune up and just beat up on DeGale.

The loss reminded me of Celestino Caballero's loss to Jason Litzau.

Lol. Good point! Being upset by a no hoper is worse than not even showing up...

When you take on a P4P#1 fighter and beat him, then get a KO in a rematch. How is that not the biggest upset?

I think what held him back is most thought he lost the 1st fight?? Cant argue the 2nd one though...
