Comments Thread For: Ali Expects Critics to Discredit His Win Because Miguel Cotto is 'Old'

NEW YORK Sadam Ali realizes some of his doubters will begrudgingly give him credit. Others, Ali suspects, still won't respect his upset victory over Miguel Cotto on Saturday night at Madison Square Garden. The newly crowned WBO super welterweight champion expects some stubborn observers to attribute his unanimous-decision victory over the 37-year-old Cotto mostly to the former champion's age and/or the left biceps injury he suffered during the seventh round.

Of course they wouldn't say that. Cotto is young and just getting his start in the sport.

He's right but the fact is that the cotto of 2 or 3 years ago would probably have won. Good performance by ali though and he deserved the win.

Yeah well, Trevor Berbick doesn't get credit for beating Muhammad Ali, Kevin Mcbride doesn't get credit for beating Tyson, camacho doesn't get credit for ko'ing sugar ray Leonard, none of those white guys get credit for ko'ing Roy Jones & Sadam Ali won't get too much credit for beating cotto. Mainly cause they beat the name & not the same version of the fighter we all knew.

Good win for Ali he deserves credit, but let’s not pretend he beat a prime cotto a prime cotto would’ve toyed with him.

Yeah, I think it’s a solid win, especially considering the fact that Ali fights at a lower weight, but this was over-the-hill Cotto in his last fight. Few people thought he would win, so he really should get a little credit.

of course it's going to happen,,,i mean a prime cotto would beat him easly, and ali is in his prime himself and barely beat an old cotto,,i don't think ali is that good,i don't like how when he had cotto hurt he didn't do much to finish him, even his corner told him he has to let his hands go,he won't get away with that against say charlo who is in his prime,he won't be a champion for long,he's a champ because cotto is old,not because he's any good

Who cares what the arm chair critics say.

Everyone and their dog expected Saddam to be stopped!!
Its always nice to have the last laugh while the naysayers are eating a heavy dose of CROW!!

And "NEW..." rang loud and clear for the right man!!!

As underdogs go it was nice to see this underdog pull this one off. Even the judges could not take this away for the man.

                  Critics be damn.

Was pretty shocked figured Cotto had enough left in him to beat Ali. Good win for the kid he looked like he is getting better and put the weight on well. Enjoy retirement Cotto.
