Comments Thread For: Duva: Kovalev Still Man to Beat in Light Heavyweight Division

Nothing about Sergey Kovalev's two losses to Andre Ward has changed his promoter's mind about the Russian knockout artist's status. Now that Andre Ward has retired, Kathy Duva thinks Kovalev is, without question, the best light heavyweight in boxing. She expects the former champion to start proving her right Saturday night in New York, where Kovalev (30-2-1, 26 KOs) will encounter Ukraine's Vyacheslav Shabranskyy (19-1, 16 KOs) for the WBO 175-pound championship Ward gave up when he retired.

No that Ward has retired? Definitely Kovalev is the man to beat.

He knows he's not fighting anyone near Ward quality this Saturday and I expect him to shine against the porous defense of Shabranskyy. My question is how hard did he train??

Questions Who has Stevenson fought in the last two years? When has Stevenson looked good in a fight?

let's see on Saturday..should he look spectacular then.. I can't put any other eastern European above him..beterbiev didn't look good in his title fight, bivol and gvozdyk(got dropped against an overmatched opponent he was to beat with no problem)ain't really tested yet..Stevenson is fighting cab drivers or past it fighters so? its kovalev..the one always taking challenges.. fighting ward, pascal and the rest..he's the man to beat...without CONTROVERSIES..respect to ward though..he did what he had to..to win

He's the default name to beat, but not "still" the man to beat. The division is wide open since Stevenson can't seem to mix it up with the other top fighters. Kovalev lost twice to Ward and recently stopped. Ward retired.

So I'd say its more wide open than anything. Someone beating Kovalev puts them in one of the top spots, but doesn't make them "the man". I think we're in multi-fight/unification territory now to find "the man".
