  • Comments Thread For: De La Hoya: 'No Disappointment Whatsoever' Over Cotto-Ali Fight

When Miguel Cotto signed with Golden Boy Promotions during the summer, the four-division champion hoped to land a big fight before ending his Hall-of-Fame career by the conclusion of this year. Cotto publicly stated his desire to fight Canelo Alvarez again or Gennady Golovkin, though neither of those options were realistic based on the Puerto Rican icon's self-imposed deadline for retirement. In Sadam Ali, he'll face an opponent far inferior to Alvarez or Golovkin in his 47th and final professional fight.

Depending on how this fight plays out and if Cotto looks dominate in the fight I think Golden Boy will convince Cotto to do one more fight.

Maybe next May or June. The Garden should sell out since Cotto always sells well in New York plus Sadam Ali is a New York native.

Oscar may not be disappointed but pretty much every boxing fan is. The thing is, I think cotto would've preferred a better opponent but Oscar messed it up by trying to impose a long term contract with golden boy on any big name fighter who was offered the cotto fight. Now cotto is going to go out vs some local NY fighter that isn't even a top 10 welter.

Does anyone know what Roc Nation bought out the Cotto contract for or how much Golden Boy have paid him for their 2 fights under contract?

Surely when Oscar signed Cotto he didn't have that oriental cat and a NY club fighter in mind for Cotto's two opponents. Would be interesting to see if Golden Boy have made money out of this arrangement.

Edit: He actually probably did see the Japanese guy happening because it was already in the works if I remember correctly.

Canelo rematch is a possibility in my opinion. Go back to DSG, Khan, Spence, Thurman, or Mikey Garcia and not do a long term contract. Just a single fight contract.
