Comments Thread For: 'Boxing Kings' Details When Americans Ruled at Heavyweight

By Thomas Gerbasi - Paul Beston insists that he didn't write his book, The Boxing Kings: When American Heavyweights Ruled the Ring, to make us all feel bad that there is no Muhammad Ali, Joe Louis, Jack Dempsey or Rocky Marciano around anymore.

I'd do almost anything for those great glory days to return but I fear aside from the odd one or two we are done.Their current crop of top five don't rate has highly has in England .The days of our mediocre fighters like Cooper,Bugner,Dunn,John L. Gardener ,Hide are done.

Add Lewis and A.J. ,Bruno, Haye and Tyson Fury to the mix and you have a decent bunch

The UK rules the HW division, no doubt about it.

Yet another American sports writer equating the US as the rest of the world. It's interesting that he says there isn't a global figure with cross over, social importance but that is false. In two ways, one that there really only was Ali who had a global, societal impact and two, someone like Wlad and more importantly, the older Vitali have had huge impact on their home country of Ukraine and beyond in other parts of non English speaking Europe. Heck, Vitali is mayor of Ukraine's biggest city in its time of greatest turmoil.

In term of the UK, Eubank and Benn, both as separate en****** and as rivals were not only household names but indicative of the Brit pop culture of the early to mid 90s. They were also HUGE tv draws and gained in excess of 20 million viewers on prime time. Khan became a similar TV draw in his early days and Hatton a huge PPV attraction within the UK and beyond.

So its the US that is really suffering from producing these types of names, and as the writer puts it, its more than just boxing but the lack of top fights is a major draw back for US fighters.

Look at all these jealous haters talking about the greatest nation on earth with more talent at HW than any civilized country : Dominic Brazeale, Eric Molina, Big-Baby Miller, Bryant Jennings, Gerald Washington, even Charles Martin ( former world champion ) puts these euro-bums to shame when Tony Bellew now is considered one of their top HWs!

these Brits are delusional! I mean they got to deep real deep to even find hope in an OBESE Tyson Fury who doesnt even have a license to box in their own country!!!

Depends on how old Angela is. If Angela's older than 60, I agree. Other than that, either Angela is incompetent or a Mormon.

Floyd is all over Vegas, so if you've ever been, you've seen his name at LEAST one time. Hell, I've been at conferences during two of his fights. So that's one.

Floyd was on Dancing With The Stars, so if that was your itch to scratch, you've seen him advertised at minimum.

Floyd's been on tons of sports talk shows, not just ESPN, over the years.

Floyd was in WWE on three separate occasions.

Floyd is constantly at basketball games.

                  Floyd's been on commercials.

For a period Floyd was all over the damn place. There's simply no way a person can say they didn't know who he was.

Now, they might say they didn't know anything about him, which would be absolutely fair and logical. But you've heard about the guy.

It's like the Macho Man. Everyone knows the name, everyone heard the voice, everyone remembers the Slim Jim commercials. Not everyone knew he was a wrestler or what he did in WCW or WWF, nor do they care.
