Comments Thread For: Roy Jones: Andre Ward's Place in Boxing History is Near The Top

Last week the boxing world received a shocker, when unified light heavyweight champion Andre Ward announced his retirement from the sport. According to Ward, the desire was no longer there and his body could no longer put up with the physical demands of the sport. Ward, only 33 years old, is the reigning WBA, IBF and WBO champion and is widely regarded as one of the best pound-for-pound boxers in the world. Most respected lists have him tabbed as the top pound-for-pound fighter in boxing.

Roy Jones' statement is bizarre as hell...

How could a guy's place be close to the top when he got dropped and lost the first fight against Kovalev who everyone on this site says is nothing special...

Ward's biggest wins are against Froch and Kessler... the second fight with Kova was controversial and he ended the fight with a low-blow - the most unimpressive "TKO" I've ever seen.

Joe Calzaghe fought Kessler at the end of his career when Kessler was undefeated and schooled him and hurt him to the body without using the dirty tactics that Ward deployed...

Calzaghe is above Ward period - so if Ward is one of the GOATs, then Calazaghe is what? Next to Ali?

Calzaghe liked to go skiing, before and after fights. (Snorted lots of dust) and somewhat tarnished what could of been one hell of a legacy. No wonder he could pump out 200 punches per round at that weight class= cocain
Not to mention he hid over in the U.K. and waited for Roy and B-hop to get old before he garnered the courage to fight them.

So Calzaghe's best wins were vs an old Jones Jr, still decent Hopkins, green/limited/exposed Lacy, good win vs Kessler...and you say Calzaghe is above Ward? Just for beating a prime Kessler and hurting him to the body? You seriously determine a HOF career based on how one punch landed in a fight or someone getting dropped?

Before Calzaghe fought Lacy, he was feasting on average guys. Then his coming out party was vs Lacy who turned out to be completely overrated. Since Lacy? Sakio Bika, Manfredo Jr, best win vs Kessler, old but decent Hopkins, shot Jones Jr.

I wouldn't say he's above Ward, yet alone way above Ward, but slightly under.

Joke calslappy sux, he lost to B-Hop too & S.O.G. would spank joke calslappy period. Ward beat kovalev almost every round after the knockdown in the 1st fight so don't kind yourself.

Ward is undefeated. 2 - 0 vs Kovalev.
For a fighter with average punching power he rocked Krusher and made him quit in the second fight
