  • Comments Thread For: Lucas Matthysse May Not Return Until 2018

Coming off his dominant performance on May 6th, where Lucas Matthysse stopped the usually durable Emmanuel Taylor in five rounds on the Saul Alvarez-Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. pay-per-view undercard at the T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas, it was expected that he would have another fight in the fall.

I doubt Matthysse becomes champion at 147. No way Matthysse has what it takes to beat Thurman, Spence or Crawford when he wins the WBO title. It's strange that all of sudden GB is getting their fighters high rankings from the WBO. How did Matthysse get ranked so high after one fight and not even being WBO champ at 140?

The same way Al Haymon gets his fighters high rankings with the WBC. Money.
Prime example is Charlo at super middleweight. He beat a one legged bum and now he's the mandatory...
        That's Boxing I guess...

This tells me Matthysse is not 100% committed to the sport anymore. I think he could still win a title, if he was 100% dedicated the way he was during the run he had at 140 when he beat Peterson etc, but this tells me isn't. As far as I know, he knew he had a date coming up in October, but clearly he did not get to the gym early enough, or did not watch his weight well enough, to even make 147 by October, despite the fact he used to make 140... that would be a bad sign. Either way, he's not injured, so if he's not ready to fight in October, which depending on the date is probably more than a month away, that tells me he's not staying committed and in fighting shape year round anymore, which will take its toll on his reflexes when he does fight.

It's too bad, because Matthysse at his very best could still be one of the most exciting welterweights, and capable of beating anyone in the division besides Spence (too big) on the right night.

Champions moving up almost always end up in the top three of said sanctioning body rankings.

Charlo was champion at 154 when he moved up, so I get why he was ranked high even though he was the IBF champ not the WBC. Its not Charlo's fault that Heiland had been the mandatory challenger and ranked number 1 since 2014.

He isn't good enough to beat any of the title holders at 147. I doubt he beats any of top contenders either. He's in line for the WBO but that title will end up with Crawford soon and he ain't beating him either. His best bet to become champion is to drop down to 140 once Crawford moves up and vacates the titles.

He got on that Maidana diet and now needs more time to get back in shape.

Come Lucas get back in the ring even if it's a bum. I just like saying Lucas walk thru people and KO them lol.... I still think he should stay at 140 I'd like to see him fight Adrien Broner, Andre Berto, rematch Danny Garcia or Khan... anybody that can walk, talk and fight really lol
