  • Comments Thread For: McGregor: Let Malignaggi Tell Mayweather; Can't Prepare for Me!

Conor McGregor isn't the least bit concerned about Paulie Malignaggi relaying sparring secrets to Floyd Mayweather Jr. Malignaggi sparred twice against McGregor before leaving the UFC superstar's training camp on terrible terms last week. McGregor gave his version of Malignaggi's time in camp Friday night after a training session at the UFC Performance Institute in Las Vegas.

hes right. Conor is the biggest unknown factor to come into boxing at this level

his whole stance is that wide MMA karate style stance and hes good at punching from that stance and his left hand is one of the most dangerous strikes in all sports

Floyd is gonna be dealing with a whole new puzzle here that he has to solve

Shouldn't we assume that if an 'unorthodox' stance from another discipline offered any advantages in boxing then it would have been utilised to good effect at the top level already?

The sweet science still has room for improvement believe it or not. How do you think styles like the Philly shell and peek a boo came about?

I'm not saying that **** is coming from McGregor, but there is other stuff to be explored for sure.

but the reason why its different is because Conor isn't a trained boxer.. hes an elite striker but hes an elite kickboxer, not just a boxer. Nor is he a grappler, he fights on the feet..

Hes got really good hands but his ability to perform comes a lot with his movement, footwork and ability to mix in his kicks with punches and elbows.. the different pattern movements.. these are things MMA fighters learn, Conor just excelled at them far beyond most strikers in MMA...
boxers don't tend to train like that, while Conor naturally fights like that

you can even see it in his boxing sparring, its carrying over, the way he switches stances and moves his arms around like hes in a bruce lee jackie chan movie or something..

it works against his MMA opponents, the question is will it be a puzzle for pro boxers? Just in the same way that Floyd will be a different puzzle for Conor than what hes used to

Not to mention hes supposed to be extremely strong in the boxing clinch because hes used to MMA grappling which is far more intense than a simple clinch in boxing. theres lots of factors people dont consider

its a very intriguing fight, people just dont wanna admit it

I agree, if employing any other type of discipline into the sport of boxing was uber successful it would have been emulated by other fighters by now. You don't see fighters coming in with Karate stances, Wing Chun stances, etc in a boxing ring. There's a reason for that, that type of movement is not beneficial inside a boxing ring. Even the most unorthodox fighters in boxing still have a sense of boxing footwork/movement.

McGregor's unorthodox bs might work for a couple rounds until Mayweather gets used to his movement. By round 4 he will be getting his ass whooped. This guy is a coward. He will never fight Broner.

                I agree, i'm intrigued.

However in my opinion if McGregor comes into the ring utilising his MMA stance and sense of distance he has lost already. This is because the majority of offensive and defensive moves carried out through that stance are not going to be applicable in this match up. In my opinion it's more likely he will only be handicapping himself if he employs it. I think he would have more success focusing on his advantages, which in this case will be power, size, momentum and aggression, rather than utilising a stance that limits them.

He should be looking to bully Floyd, ala Maidana, and not try to outwit him. In theory he should be able to throw caution to the wind and not worry too much about what is coming back at him either.

It'll be interesting to see how it plays out

Connor thinks all that extra movement is going to confuse floyd lol. Floyd is going to stand in the pocket with the high guard and punch the **** out him wasting little energy while Connor will burn him self out by the 3rd round from all that unnecessary moving.

And the fact the only way he can really land shots is getting into boxing range and then he's in Floyd's world. This isn't MMA where you can get your range, keep distance and whatnot with kicks and and have to think about takedowns.

McGregor can do want he wants in his movement but if he wants to establish a range and land shots then he has get within a certain distance to use his hands because that's all he can use.

A lot of people seem to be missing that. All the MMA skills and movement in the world won't help when all you can use is your fists.

It's funny, when McGregor calls it "half a fight" - that may well be very true compared to what he's used to, but that is a disadvantage for him, not an advantage.
